  • Print annotation guide

On the board before they walk in: Warm-up: circle one word in today's passage that feels 'loud.'

0:00–0:10 · Warm-up

Students mark one 'loud' word in the passage and jot why.

0:10–0:25 · Modeled annotation

Model annotating the first paragraph on the projector.

Watch what I mark and, more importantly, watch what I don't bother marking.

0:25–0:45 · Independent annotation

Students annotate the remaining two paragraphs on their own.

Pull a small group for extra support if needed.

If you run short
  1. Assign the independent annotation as homework instead.

Do not cut: Modeled annotation — students need to see the process once before doing it alone.

What carries forward: The annotation habit from today carries through the rest of the unit.

Next lesson: Lesson 3 moves from annotation to a short written response.
